ABOUT INSITU
INSITU Site-Specific Dance Festival is a unique cultural offering in NYC. The first of its kind in Queens, INSITU is a two-day outdoor dance festival taking place at four public waterfront parks along the East River in LIC. A New York Times Top Pick of “15 Dance Festivals to See in the Summer”, INSITU presents dance in unusual places and invites visitors to discover LIC through dance. All INSITU programming is free and open to the public, making the arts accessible to a wide population and encouraging audiences and community members from different backgrounds to engage, create and connect.
The inaugural INSITU 2017 presented 75 dynamic dance performances on piers, playgrounds, staircases and shorelines by 24 emerging and established NYC-based choreographers. Over 7,500 audience members from all over NYC and the tri-state area journeyed up and down the LIC waterfront. Leading up to the festival, we hosted a free three-month INSITU Community Dance Workshop in partnership with Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement.
INSITU 2018 is taking place on August 4 + 5 and is presenting 22 national and international choreographers and a total of 144 performances, 24 opportunities to move and create community dance and 2 one-month community dance workshops for seniors and young adults in partnership with Jacob A. MISSION
INSITU’s mission is to activate public spaces through dance, provide a space for dialogue and integration and create community through the arts. It is an initiative that aims to strengthen, bridge and celebrate the diverse communities living along the Long Island City waterfront by using dance as a tool for deeper community engagement. INSITU aspires to make dance accessible, connect artists with audiences, and raise awareness of the power of movement by bringing it into public spaces of our community. INSITU is a supportive platform for artists to develop new work and contributes to the visibility of the arts in Queens.
