Experience dance in unusual places with INSITU 2018!
Take part in four different 75-minute performance walks
that will lead you through a chain of dynamic dance performances
and a participatory site-specific movement workshop.
144 performances by 22 NYC-based, national and international choreographers transform the LIC waterfront into a dancing spectacle. Performers will maneuver through playgrounds, appear in hidden corners and dance on piers, staircases and shorelines.
There are four performance sequences EACH DAY in EACH PARK,
all starting at 1 PM, 3 PM, 5 PM and 7 PM. After each sequence, jump on a bike, bus, ferry or walk to the next park!

This chapter of BODIES OF WATER is architected as a celebration of Long Island City, while reminding us of the complex relationship the city has with its waters. This timely new work is inspired by its location and compelled by ideas of water as a natural element, spiritual/cyclical entity, transitional space, and port. Bodies of water is a political performance touching on the ideas of immigration and refugee crisis, fishing rights, and water ecology.

The Third Rail interprets experiences from enslaved African-Americans escaping through the Underground Railroad as a metaphoric parallel to the modern-day African-American journey, ultimately exploring the question, "What are blacks in today's America running from/towards?"

Mixing childhood playfulness with adult physicality, the familiar events and forms occurring in a basketball court are now incorporated with different memories from a shattered world.

Melissa Riker guides audiences in a quickly creative, narrative experience on the historic railway ties. She asks you to consider the quiet of a subway car, music in your ears. Now, think of the best moment you’ve witnessed between New Yorkers. Whether in an audience, on a bus, or in a quick conversation on the street, our time with strangers is how urban lives move forward.

Peer/Pier is a meeting in vogue, an homage to the art form's origin and a showcase of its presence. The fluidity of the water we are surrounded by is embodied in the clothes worn and movement executed. The pier is a place of exploration and freedom. At the pier we have always vogued down and in vogue we are all equal. At the pier we are peers.

A supported solo, Pathway focuses on one woman's journey to patiently but insistently carve her own way through the world. Using breathe, rhythm and movement, live vocalist Amelia Lang-Wallace and dancer Sarah Chien open a playful path and invite the audience to experience it for themselves.

Shape of Memory is inspired by the notion that light from a star is memory made visible. Melding scale/color/distance of the iconic Pepsi sign, it explores how memory inhabits the body and self, individually and collectively, offering a new memory as an anecdote to the unstoppable passage of time.

Cecilia Fontanesi invites participants to explore the space around the dazzling Pepsi-Cola sign facing the East River. Everyone will be encouraged to move in different ways, walking, running, jumping, rolling, and crawling, literally in touch with each other and with the sign's pillars, through hands, forearms, heads, shoulders, backs, hips, and feet. Together we will reflect on what it means to be given space, to hold it, and to intersect the space of others.

The role of one key player in a team sport, the responsibility one has on a team, the interdependency experienced, how impossible one person can play a team sport, how each individual on a team is necessary to maintain balance, the point of view of one player seen separately.

Dressed in white, nineteen people will dance in and out of unison on and around the stairway at Queensbridge Park, making use of the steps and the pathways that are part of the architecture.

What's hot, saxy, and sticky all over? An afternoon in the month of August spent with two gooey-eyed romantics, and a clownin' quirky saxophonist. Was it fate and $1 slice of pizza that brought these three suckers to the city of dreams? Or simply a sad coincidence that leaves them wondering why they ever moved to a city where they can't ever get any sleep?

Christopher Núñez creates a choreographic game on the volleyball court of Queensbridge Park. Ten volunteers from the audience will be invited to take a number and improvise a movement that the whole audience will learn, one at the time. After all 10 volunteers execute their individual movement, everyone gathered for the experience will create their own choreographic score using at three of the learned movements.

Anger of bulimia explores the concept of what it mean to be selfish and the struggles that come with resisting it. African dance is a source we draw from order to flee the hunger of greed.

Along with the global growth of the Hip-Hop culture has come a watering down, a loss of sorts, of the culture itself. The connection to the music is being lost as the dance continues to grow beyond its roots. The real understanding, the marriage of the beat, the music and the dance is being “renovated”, changed to appeal to the masses . . . it is being gentrified!

THE BREATH OF DAWN

The Breath of Dawn is an invitation to experience the communion between dance and the energy of the sunrise. The performance embodies a collective homage to the natural world that surrounds us. Choreography and movements are inspired by nature elements like seagrass, wind, rocks, tides and birds.

HANDS ON, EYES ON, BODIES MOVING

JoAnna Mendl Shaw leads participants in creating a kinetic partnership WITH the stone platform in Socrates Sculpture Park. A short exploration of the basics of creating a choreographic score, participants will be perform a movement motif, phrase or physical task in order to focus on a specific quality of the site.
